Discovering the vibrant Mondesa open market in Namibia led me to a remarkable encounter with Emelda Simbotwe, a passionate entrepreneur running an informal stall offering an array of healthy food options. What struck me about Emelda’s stall was not only the quality of her products but her diverse range of spices and herbs. One particular standout was her chili powder, sourced all the way from Zambia. These potent sachets, priced at an affordable N$5 each, add a fiery kick to any dish. Chili powder is known to be rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, offering numerous health benefits.
Emelda also offered Kampentas, a type of dried fish sourced from the Zambezi region. These flavorful fish morsels are not only a culinary delight but also a nutritional powerhouse. Packed with essential omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, Kampentas is a popular ingredient in traditional African dishes. Cassava flour caught my attention. This versatile root vegetable is a staple in many traditional Namibian dishes and are naturally vegan-friendly, making them an excellent choice for individuals with dietary restrictions or sensitivities.
Emelda generously shared some of her favorite cassava recipes with me. Oshifima, a hearty porridge made from cassava flour and mahangu flour, is a beloved Namibian dish. Additionally, cassava chips, a delightful snack widely enjoyed in Namibia, showcase the versatility of this root vegetable. Emelda also emphasized the culinary value of cassava leaves, which can be incorporated into soups and stews, enhancing both flavor and nutrition.
However, what truly amazed me was the journey Emelda undertakes to acquire her bulk products. Traveling all the way to Zambia, she navigates the challenges of transporting her precious cargo on buses over several days, ensuring that her customers have access to these exceptional ingredients in Swakopmund.
As I departed Emelda’s stall, armed with a bag of Kampentas and cassava flour, I couldn’t help but reflect on the wealth of nutritious and sustainable food options that Namibia has to offer. Emelda Simbotwe’s dedication to promoting health, eco-friendliness, and the exploration of diverse culinary delights is truly inspiring.
